Tribal Indian Quilts in Jodhpur
Shopping for these amazing textiles was a pleasure and adventure all in one. The salesmen pull out all the stops, digging into the basement to entice shoppers, offering chai, food whatever they can to keep you interested and entertained. Dilli Haut-A place to go in Delhi
If you are in Delhi and you love hand crafts then you must go to Dilli Haut. A compilation of textile, wood craft, metal work, fine arts and clay artisans from all over India. They gather, each vendor only getting 1 week to show off the crafts of their region. The food here is also amazing, from North to South, a showcase of culinary variations from all over the country. Colors from the South
From Goa to Kerala, South India has much to do, see and explore. Elephant sanctuaries, organic spice plantations, ancient temples and pristine lakes. The beach cities along the western coast host thousands of European and American visitors each year. They visit for the tropical climate, warm waters of the Arabian Sea, the food and the culture.
Ancient temples and exquisite silks
Picked up some iridescent woven fabrics while in South India, professionally manufactured in Tamil Nadu, just east of Kerala. Gorgeous lustrous fabrics with iridescent color and luminous quality. Very lightweight and slightly sheer, these make fabulous pants for hot weather, dresses and blouses. Use for art quilting and embroider them for extra special projects. Department stores in Trivandrum, a fabric buyer's paradise!
Fabric stores in India, an adventures in itself! Indians take textiles seriously and women are obsessed with colors, textures and designs for their garments. Even the husbands come with their wives to have a say in what will be chosen for their fancy wear. No color is too bright, no design too intricate.
Oooh, la la! Rhinestones and lace. Sequins, tulle and heavy embroidery. Flourescent, ombre and gemstone colors to draw attention to the beautiful women who wear these pieces. It's a competition for who can show off the most color, glitz and shine. A feast for the eyes indeed. Everywhere I go my shutter is always clicking!
Beaded and Embellished!
The name of the game is embellishment. From everyday wear to special celebrations, Indian women always choose the brightest colors, detailed textures and design to show off their fashionable tastes. My challenge is how to choose. I spent a long time pouring over the multitude of colors and designs to bring back the best of these trims for my customers at FabricAndArt.com

Ponmudi Hill Station in the Clouds
Elephants of Kerala, here lives one of the world's great Elephant preserves, Punnathur Kota, or Anakkotta, meaning "Elephant Fort" on the grounds of an old palace. A must see if you are lucky enough to travel to South India. Just a few hours drive from Trivandrum through magnificent forested mountains you will find these majestic beings. The expert mahouts take special care with their charges. With almost 60 elephants residing here, each with its assigned handler, from their birth, capture or retirement, these elephants are treated with dignity and cautious respect. Free to live, feed and bathe in a magnificent forest, while being assured a safe existence. Unfortunately human encroachment into crucial habitat has required the elephants of the area to be kept in the preserve, where human contact can be monitored and visitors are educated about the species and their special needs.
Babies playing in the sun, adult elephants lolling in the water. A visit to the preserve promises the opportunity to pet, ride, feed and even bathe these magnificent creatures. All while under the watchful eyes of their mahouts. This 10 acre preserve offers an amazing visit to tourist worldwide, you can even book an overnight stay for the ultimate adventure.
Trivandrum and Textiles!
My first stop, Pothys department store, Trivandrum in the State of Kerala. One of the most popular destinations for the purchase of fine textiles, housewares, women's and men's fashion and yes even groceries in this 6 floor mall.
India...what comes to mind? Hindu festivals, bright colors, beautiful women and their exotic, embellished saris? Those things are all easily seen in India, as well as poverty, sanitation issues, garbage on the streets and stray dogs. In almost every city in the world you can find poverty but look beyond and find a beautiful gem of a country exploding into the global software, manufacturing, textile, home decor and fashion market. India is a virtual rainbow of colors, smells, textures and characters enriching the diversity of cultures and regions. Take an adventure, you'll be mesmerized by the incredible artistry going back centuries, explore the potential of the modern Indian marketplace. You'll be intrigued, surprised and I'm sure inspired by what you see.
